In the week ending July 29, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 276,000, an increase of 2,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 274,000. The 4-week moving average was
295,750, a decrease of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of
300,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.7 percent for the week ending July 22, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending July 22 was 2,104,000, a decrease of 71,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,175,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,131,750, an increase of 13,500 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,118,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 253,482 in the week ending July 29, a decrease of
43,535 from the previous week. There were 254,195 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6
percent during the week ending July 22, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,032,710, a decrease of 124,607 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was
2,139,377.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending July 15.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,297 in the week ending July 22, an increase of 31 from the
prior week. There were 1,143 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 64 from the preceding week.
There were 16,719 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 15, an increase of 1,790 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,244, an
increase of 44 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
July 15 were in Puerto Rico (5.0 percent), Alaska (3.6), Michigan (3.0), Rhode
Island (3.0), Pennsylvania (2.5), New Jersey (2.4), Oregon (2.4), Washington
(2.4), California (2.3), and Arkansas (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
July 22 were in Delaware (+1,436), Texas (+1,263), Georgia (+1,007), and the
District of Columbia (+50), while the largest decreases were in Michigan
(-19,439), North Carolina (-12,421), New York (-9,062), South Carolina
(-7,129), and Indiana (-3,739).
