In the week ending July 15, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 311,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 320,000. The 4-week moving average was
307,750, an increase of 1,750 from the previous week's revised average of
306,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.7 percent for the week ending July 8, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending July 8 was 2,134,000, an increase of 21,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,113,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,091,500, an increase of 24,750 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,066,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 376,405 in the week ending July 15, an increase
of 13,213 from the previous week. There were 369,123 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent during the week ending July 8, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,146,366, an increase of 291,524 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was
2,238,123.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending July 1.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,730 in the week ending July 8, an increase of 503 from the
prior week. There were 1,010 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 77 from the preceding week.
There were 13,406 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending July 1, an increase of 960 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,359, a
decrease of 28 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
July 1 were in Puerto Rico (4.5 percent), Alaska (3.7), Rhode Island (2.6),
Oregon (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), Washington (2.2), Arkansas (2.1), Mississippi
(2.1), New Jersey (2.1), and California (2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
July 8 were in Michigan (+23,416), Wisconsin (+7,231), Kentucky (+6,304),
Indiana (+5,752), and New York (+5,584), while the largest decreases were in
New Jersey (-5,009), California (-3,955), Virginia (-2,418), Connecticut
(-748), and Maine (-282).
