In the week ending July 8, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 319,000, an increase of 27,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 292,000. The 4-week moving average was
305,500, an increase of 5,250 from the previous week's revised average of
300,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.7 percent for the week ending July 1, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's revised rate of 1.6 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending July 1 was 2,118,000, an increase of 64,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,054,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,069,000, an increase of 27,000 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,042,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 361,721 in the week ending July 8, an increase of
81,277 from the previous week. There were 364,078 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5
percent during the week ending July 1, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 1,859,631, a decrease of 20,121 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,012,194.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending June 24.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,224 in the week ending July 1, an increase of 541 from the
prior week. There were 1,080 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 72 from the preceding week.
There were 12,655 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 24, a decrease of 404 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,664, a
decrease of 111 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
June 24 were in Puerto Rico (4.9 percent), Alaska (3.9), Rhode Island (2.7),
Oregon (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.3), Washington (2.3), California (2.2), Arkansas
(2.1), New Jersey (2.0), Mississippi (1.8), Nevada (1.8), and West Virginia
(1.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending July 1 were in Michigan (+4,619), New York (+4,418), Virginia (+4,119),
New Jersey (+2,104), and Indiana (+1,573), while the largest decreases were in
Massachusetts (-1,679), Maryland (-1,504), Pennsylvania (-1,421), California
(-1,363), and Oregon (-1,047).
