SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending July 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 296,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 308,000. The 4-week moving average was 301,500, a decrease of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of 305,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending June 24, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 24 was 2,084,000, an increase of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,069,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,049,500, an increase of 21,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,028,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 283,708 in the week ending July 1, an increase of 9,848 from the previous week. There were 303,758 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending June 24, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,906,509, an increase of 40,340 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,033,329.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 17.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,677 in the week ending June 24, an increase of 316 from the prior week. There were 1,008 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 30 from the preceding week.

There were 13,058 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 17, an increase of 1,175 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,777, an increase of 206 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 17 were in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (4.3), Rhode Island (2.4), Oregon (2.3), Washington (2.3), California (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.2), Arkansas (2.0), New Jersey (1.9), and West Virginia (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 24 were in New Jersey (+4,506), Michigan (+3,498), Massachusetts (+2,616), Connecticut (+1,444), and Rhode Island (+1,125), while the largest decreases were in Pennsylvania (-2,357), North Carolina (-1,102), Iowa (-824), Ohio (-794), and Wisconsin (-688).
