SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 306,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 304,000. The 4-week moving average was 305,250, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 301,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending June 17, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 17 was 2,078,000, an increase of 43,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,035,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,030,750, an increase of 23,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,007,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 272,195 in the week ending June 24, an increase of 6,895 from the previous week. There were 269,755 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending June 17, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,874,183, an increase of 38,547 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,990,497.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending June 10.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,351 in the week ending June 17, a decrease of 315 from the prior week. There were 1,034 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 21 from the preceding week.

There were 11,862 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 10, a decrease of 358 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,571, an increase of 80 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 10 were in Puerto Rico (4.9 percent), Alaska (4.5), Oregon (2.4), Washington (2.4), California (2.2), Rhode Island (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.1), Arkansas (2.0), Nevada (1.9), New Jersey (1.9), and West Virginia (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 17 were in California (+3,026), Massachusetts (+1,478), Washington (+834), New Jersey (+813), and Connecticut (+729), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-1,636), New York (-1,550), Missouri (-1,123), Georgia (-904), and North Carolina (-874).
