In the week ending June 17, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 302,000, an increase of 5,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 297,000. The 4-week moving average was
300,500, an increase of 4,250 from the previous week's revised average of
296,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.6 percent for the week ending June 10, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending June 10 was 2,045,000, an increase of
33,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,012,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,010,500, an increase of 25,000 from the preceding week's revised
average of 1,985,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 264,061 in the week ending June 17, a decrease of
3,385 from the previous week. There were 267,825 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5
percent during the week ending June 10, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 1,844,262, a decrease of 7,111 from the preceding week. A year earlier,
the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,017,627.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending June 3.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,657 in the week ending June 10, an increase of 20 from the
prior week. There were 1,051 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 219 from the preceding week.
There were 12,457 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 3, an increase of 1,850 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,781, an
increase of 538 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
June 3 were in Puerto Rico (4.8 percent), Alaska (4.6), Oregon (2.4), Rhode
Island (2.4), Washington (2.4), California (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.1), Arkansas
(2.0), New Jersey (2.0), and West Virginia (1.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending June 10 were in Pennsylvania (+5,109), California (+4,978), New York
(+2,113), Florida (+2,030), and Georgia (+1,936), while the largest decreases
were in Texas (-2,398), Kentucky (-1,356), Wisconsin (-905), Alabama (-849),
and Washington (-315).
