SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 10, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 296,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 312,000. The 4-week moving average was 295,750, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average of 291,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending June 3, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 3 was 2,024,000, an increase of 28,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 1,996,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,987,500, an increase of 18,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 1,968,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 265,852 in the week ending June 10, an increase of 23,159 from the previous week. There were 267,582 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending June 3, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,861,940, an increase of 89,502 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,002,752.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 27.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,621 in the week ending June 3, an increase of 428 from the prior week. There were 830 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 55 from the preceding week.

There were 10,863 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 27, a decrease of 451 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,543, an increase of 11 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 27 were in Puerto Rico (4.5 percent), Alaska (4.3), Oregon (2.4), Washington (2.4), Rhode Island (2.2), California (2.1), Arkansas (2.0), Pennsylvania (2.0), New Jersey (1.9), Idaho (1.8), Nevada (1.8), and West Virginia (1.8).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 3 were in Wisconsin (+2,286), North Carolina (+1,900), Texas (+1,634), Illinois (+1,312), and Kentucky (+1,252), while the largest decreases were in Michigan (-2,695), Maryland (-568), California (-530), Mississippi (-526), and Georgia (-457).
