SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending June 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 309,000, an increase of 20,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 289,000. The 4-week moving average was 290,250, an increase of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 287,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending May 27, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 27 was 2,000,000, an increase of 12,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 1,988,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,970,500, an increase of 500 from the preceding week's revised average of 1,970,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 240,287 in the week ending June 3, an increase of 758 from the previous week. There were 256,922 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending May 27, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,775,993, a decrease of 27,258 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,971,914.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 20.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,187 in the week ending May 27, an increase of 243 from the prior week. There were 885 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 15 from the preceding week.

There were 11,566 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 20, an increase of 733 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,824, an increase of 38 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 20 were in Alaska (4.7 percent), Puerto Rico (4.6), Oregon (2.5), Washington (2.4), California (2.3), Rhode Island (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.1), Arkansas (1.9), Nevada (1.9), and New Jersey (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 27 were in Michigan (+1,407), Alabama (+644), Ohio (+511), Wisconsin (+504), and Pennsylvania (+476), while the largest decreases were in California (-1,330), Delaware (-494), Mississippi (-364), Washington (-289), and South Carolina (-209).
