SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 27, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 286,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 285,000. The 4-week moving average was 286,750, a decrease of 4,500 from the previous week's revised average of 291,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending May 20, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 20 was 1,980,000, an increase of 34,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 1,946,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,968,250, a decrease of 3,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 1,971,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 236,933 in the week ending May 27, an increase of 1,860 from the previous week. There were 260,517 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4 percent during the week ending May 20, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,796,190, a decrease of 42,687 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 1,991,790.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 13.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 943 in the week ending May 20, a decrease of 42 from the prior week. There were 867 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 93 from the preceding week.

There were 11,094 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 13, a decrease of 805 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,064, an increase of 377 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 13 were in Puerto Rico (5.4 percent), Alaska (4.6), Oregon (2.6), Washington (2.6), Rhode Island (2.4), California (2.3), Pennsylvania (2.1), New Jersey (2.0), Arkansas (1.9), Idaho (1.9), and Nevada (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 20 were in Mississippi (+1,709), South Carolina (+835), Florida (+813), Arkansas (+667), and Tennessee (+663), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,682), Oregon (-807), New Jersey (-690), Washington (-643), and Pennsylvania (-332).
