SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 284,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 278,000. The 4-week moving average was 291,000, an increase of 500 from the previous week's revised average of 290,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending May 13, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 13 was 1,957,000, an increase of 5,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 1,952,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,974,750, an increase of 12,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 1,962,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 234,285 in the week ending May 20, an increase of 2,836 from the previous week. There were 250,360 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending May 13, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,849,352, a decrease of 9,201 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,066,710.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 6.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 984 in the week ending May 13, a decrease of 21 from the prior week. There were 960 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 62 from the preceding week.

There were 12,130 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 6, an increase of 749 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 11,987, a decrease of 42 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 6 were in Alaska (5.2 percent), Puerto Rico (4.4), Oregon (2.6), Washington (2.6), Rhode Island (2.4), California (2.3), New Jersey (2.1), Pennsylvania (2.1), Idaho (2.0), Arkansas (1.9), Montana (1.9), and Nevada (1.9).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 13 were in Indiana (+774), Oregon (+532), Texas (+347), Mississippi (+272), and Wisconsin (+228), while the largest decreases were in New York (-9,204), North Carolina (-2,944), California (-2,706), Kentucky (-2,038), and South Carolina (-1,709).
