In the week ending May 13, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 276,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 297,000. The 4-week moving average was
289,750, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of
285,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.6 percent for the week ending May 6, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 6 was 1,957,000, a decrease of 43,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,000,000. The 4-week moving average
was 1,963,750, a decrease of 2,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
1,966,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 230,184 in the week ending May 13, a decrease of
29,085 from the previous week. There were 251,063 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5
percent during the week ending May 6, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 1,863,052, a decrease of 96,757 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.7 percent and the volume was 2,058,927.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending April 29.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,002 in the week ending May 6, an increase of 110 from the
prior week. There were 1,021 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 88 from the preceding week.
There were 11,625 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 29, a decrease of 1,337 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,323, an
increase of 342 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
April 29 were in Alaska (5.1 percent), Puerto Rico (4.9), Oregon (2.7), Rhode
Island (2.6), Washington (2.6), California (2.5), New Jersey (2.3),
Pennsylvania (2.2), Idaho (2.1), Montana (2.0), Nevada (2.0), and Vermont
(2.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week
ending May 6 were in California (+9,112), Kentucky (+1,541), Michigan (+1,337),
Alabama (+1,166), and Georgia (+1,082), while the largest decreases were in
Wisconsin (-3,144), New Jersey (-2,974), Connecticut (-1,094), Ohio (-484), and
Oklahoma (-457).
