In the week ending May 6, the advance figure for seasonally
adjusted initial claims was 297,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous
week's revised figure of 304,000. The 4-week moving average was 285,250, an
increase of 7,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 277,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.6 percent for the week ending April 29, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending April 29 was 2,011,000, an increase of
16,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 1,995,000. The 4-week moving
average was 1,970,000, an increase of 15,500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 1,954,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 258,821 in the week ending May 6, an increase of
9,655 from the previous week. There were 273,961 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6
percent during the week ending April 29, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 1,970,333, a decrease of 48,926 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,132,520.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending April 22.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 892 in the week ending April 29, an increase of 57 from the
prior week. There were 932 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 121 from the preceding week.
There were 13,192 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 22, an increase of 628 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,268, an
increase of 111 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
April 22 were in Puerto Rico (6.4 percent), Alaska (5.4), Rhode Island (3.0),
Oregon (2.7), Washington (2.7), California (2.4), Idaho (2.3), Pennsylvania
(2.3), Montana (2.2), New Jersey (2.1), Vermont (2.1), and West Virginia (2.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
April 29 were in New York (+6,736), North Carolina (+4,372), New Jersey
(+2,864), Puerto Rico (+2,184), and Tennessee (+1,021), while the largest
decreases were in Massachusetts (-4,913), California (-4,567), Rhode Island
(-1,574), Alabama (-670), and Michigan (-632).
