In the week ending April 29, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 303,000, an increase of 20,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 283,000. The 4-week moving average was
277,500, an increase of 10,250 from the previous week's revised average of
267,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.6 percent for the week ending April 22, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.5 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending April 22 was 2,007,000, an increase of
97,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 1,910,000. The 4-week moving
average was 1,958,500, a decrease of 500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 1,959,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 248,516 in the week ending April 29, an increase
of 7,417 from the previous week. There were 252,190 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6
percent during the week ending April 22, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 2,030,890, an increase of 18,121 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 1.8 percent and the volume was 2,184,330.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending April 15.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 836 in the week ending April 22, a decrease of 162 from the
prior week. There were 810 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 108 from the preceding week.
There were 12,806 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 15, a decrease of 1,358 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,439, an
increase of 290 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
April 15 were in Alaska (5.4 percent), Puerto Rico (3.2), Oregon (2.8),
Washington (2.8), Rhode Island (2.7), California (2.6), Idaho (2.4), Montana
(2.3), Pennsylvania (2.2), and Vermont (2.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
April 22 were in Massachusetts (+5,262), California (+3,630), Pennsylvania
(+2,345), New Jersey (+1,926), and Wisconsin (+1,451), while the largest
decreases were in Puerto Rico (-2,047), North Carolina (-2,008), Michigan
(-1,918), Georgia (-1,878), and Delaware (-1,382).
