SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending April 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 283,000, an increase of 26,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 257,000. The 4-week moving average was 267,000, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 262,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent for the week ending April 15, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 15 was 1,930,000, a decrease of 44,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 1,974,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,965,500, a decrease of 11,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 1,976,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 240,588 in the week ending April 22, an increase of 3,954 from the previous week. There were 263,835 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent during the week ending April 15, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,034,512, a decrease of 85,684 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9 percent and the volume was 2,171,924.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April 8.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 999 in the week ending April 15, a decrease of 132 from the prior week. There were 937 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 143 from the preceding week.

There were 14,394 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 8, an increase of 806 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,422, a decrease of 252 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 8 were in Alaska (5.9 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), Rhode Island (2.9), Washington (2.9), Oregon (2.8), California (2.6), Idaho (2.6), Montana (2.5), Pennsylvania (2.5), New Jersey (2.2), Vermont (2.2), and West Virginia (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 15 were in Georgia (+587), Rhode Island (+167), and South Carolina (+103), while the largest decreases were in California (-3,160), Pennsylvania (-2,760), Texas (-2,584), Alabama (-2,546), and Washington (-1,888).
