SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 257,000, a decrease of 9,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 266,000. The 4-week moving average was 262,500, a decrease of
1,500 from the previous week's revised average of 264,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6
percent for the week ending April 8, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.6 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 8 was 1,984,000, an increase of 33,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 1,951,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,979,750, a
decrease of 14,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 1,994,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 236,031 in the week ending April 15, a decrease of 36,145
from the previous week. There were 286,018 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending April 8, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,130,972, a
decrease of 30,915 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.9
percent and the volume was 2,368,861.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April
1.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,127 in the week ending April 8, an increase of 230 from the prior
week. There were 1,077 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 165 from the preceding week.
There were 13,807 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending April 1, a decrease of 1,837 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,937, an increase of 202 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 1 were
in Alaska (5.6 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), Rhode Island (2.9), Washington
(2.9), Idaho (2.8), Oregon (2.8), California (2.7), Montana (2.5), New Jersey
(2.4), and Pennsylvania (2.4).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 8 were
in Texas (+4,050), Alabama (+2,821), Pennsylvania (+2,615), Washington
(+2,489), and Tennessee (+2,227), while the largest decreases were in North
Carolina (-1,528), Delaware (-769), Maine (-326), Oklahoma (-215), and Nebraska
(-4).
