SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 264,000, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 261,000. The 4-week moving average was 263,250, an increase
of 500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 262,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6
percent for the week ending April 1, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.6 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending April 1 was 1,960,000, a decrease of 54,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,014,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,998,000, a
decrease of 19,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,017,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 270,627 in the week ending April 8, an increase of 42,306
from the previous week. There were 327,621 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent during
the week ending April 1, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,171,145, a decrease of 130,642 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.0 percent and the volume was 2,425,619.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March
25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 890 in the week ending April 1, a decrease of 14 from the prior week.
There were 908 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 82
from the preceding week.
There were 15,837 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 25, a decrease of 713 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,028, an increase of 16 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 25 were
in Alaska (6.0 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Rhode Island (3.2), Oregon (3.1),
Washington (3.1), Idaho (3.0), Montana (3.0), California (2.9), Pennsylvania
(2.7), New Jersey (2.5), and West Virginia (2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 1 were
in Delaware (+944), Missouri (+464), Arizona (+407), Oklahoma (+366), and New
Jersey (+280), while the largest decreases were in Georgia (-2,354), Ohio
(-2,054), Oregon (-1,840), California (-1,179), and Tennessee (-918).
