SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending April 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 260,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 266,000. The 4-week moving average was 262,750, a decrease
of 5,250 from the previous week's unrevised average of 268,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6
percent for the week ending March 25, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.6 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 25 was 2,023,000, an increase of 45,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 1,978,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,020,000, a decrease of 19,750 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,039,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 227,651 in the week ending April 1, a decrease of 12,670
from the previous week. There were 263,516 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during
the week ending March 25, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,312,057, a
decrease of 8,049 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.0
percent and the volume was 2,452,286.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March
18.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 904 in the week ending March 25, a decrease of 31 from the prior week.
There were 988 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 57
from the preceding week.
There were 16,761 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 18, an increase of 100 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,262, an increase of 446 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 18 were
in Alaska (5.9 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Idaho (3.3), Rhode Island (3.3),
Washington (3.2), California (3.0), Oregon (3.0), Montana (2.8), New Jersey
(2.6), and Pennsylvania (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 25
were in Oregon (+1,501), Georgia (+1,363), New York (+746), North Carolina
(+746), and Colorado (+510), while the largest decreases were in Texas
(-2,314), California (-1,881), Ohio (-958), Washington (-657), and Minnesota
(-492).
