SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending March 25, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 266,000, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 263,000. The 4-week moving average was 268,000, a decrease of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 270,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending March 18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending March 18 was 2,000,000, a decrease of 48,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,048,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,046,500, a decrease of 22,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,069,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 240,282 in the week ending March 25, a decrease of 1,533 from the previous week. There were 260,817 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending March 18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,345,541, a decrease of 122,341 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,550,442.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March 11.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 932 in the week ending March 18, a decrease of 30 from the prior week. There were 1,043 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 1 from the preceding week.

There were 16,863 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 11, an increase of 1,405 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,059, a decrease of 235 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 11 were in Alaska (6.2 percent), Puerto Rico (5.3), Rhode Island (3.6), Idaho (3.5), Montana (3.3), Washington (3.3), Oregon (3.1), California (3.0), Pennsylvania (3.0), New Jersey (2.7), and West Virginia (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 18 were in Texas (+1,851), Georgia (+608), Louisiana (+449), Kentucky (+223), and Alabama (+203), while the largest decreases were in California (-5,205), New York (-1,419), Tennessee (-1,367), Washington (-1,108), and Pennsylvania (-961).
