SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 266,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 262,000. The 4-week moving average was 271,000, a decrease
of 750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 271,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent for the week ending March 11, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's revised rate of 1.6 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending March 11 was 2,049,000, an increase of 12,000 from the
preceding week's revised level of 2,037,000. The 4-week moving average was
2,069,500, a decrease of 11,500 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,081,000.
NADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 245,262 in the week ending March 18, a decrease of 9,673
from the previous week. There were 275,453 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during
the week ending March 11, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,469,008, a
decrease of 9,531 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2
percent and the volume was 2,638,731.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March
4.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 964 in the week ending March 11, a decrease of 48 from the prior week.
There were 1,043 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 84
from the preceding week.
There were 15,684 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending March 4, a decrease of 2,488 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,517, an increase of 62 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 4 were
in Alaska (6.1 percent), Puerto Rico (5.2), Rhode Island (3.7), Idaho (3.6),
Washington (3.5), Oregon (3.2), California (3.1), Montana (3.0), New Jersey
(2.8), and Pennsylvania (2.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 11
were in Tennessee (+919), Ohio (+867), Texas (+692), Arkansas (+579), and
Nevada (+419), while the largest decreases were in New York (-7,499), Michigan
(-3,017), California (-2,983), Kansas (-2,750), and Delaware (-1,511).
