In the week ending March 11, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 262,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 281,000. The 4-week moving average was
271,750, a decrease of 5,750 from the previous week's revised average of
277,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.7 percent for the week ending March 4, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 4 was 2,051,000, a decrease of 57,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,108,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,086,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,107,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 255,102 in the week ending March 11, a decrease
of 27,636 from the previous week. There were 289,813 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0
percent during the week ending March 4, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,496,327, a decrease of 140,722 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,642,955.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Feb. 26.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,011 in the week ending March 4, an increase of 153 from the
prior week. There were 1,124 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 258 from the preceding week.
There were 18,346 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 26, an increase of 2,362 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,674, an
increase of 267 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 26 were in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.3), Rhode Island (4.3),
Idaho (3.7), Montana (3.6), Washington (3.5), Oregon (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.3),
West Virginia (3.2), and California (3.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 4 were in New York (+7,786), Michigan (+4,327), California (+2,864),
Kansas (+2,498), and Delaware (+1,299), while the largest decreases were in
Massachusetts (-4,120), North Carolina (-1,573), Rhode Island (-1,379), Texas
(-715), and Indiana (-427).
