SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending March 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 280,000, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's
unrevised figure of 275,000. The 4-week moving average was 277,250, a decrease
of 6,750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 284,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent for the week ending Feb. 26, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Feb. 26 was 2,123,000, an increase of 35,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,088,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,110,250, a
decrease of 3,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,113,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 281,404 in the week ending March 4, an increase of 22,736
from the previous week. There were 297,325 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during
the week ending Feb. 26, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,655,645, an increase of 137,559 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,274,709.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week
ending Feb. 19.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 857 in the week ending Feb. 26, a decrease of 194 from the prior week.
There were 864 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 194
from the preceding week.
There were 16,154 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Feb. 19, a decrease of 2,733 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,578, a decrease of 121 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 19 were
in Alaska (6.2 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), Rhode Island (3.9), Idaho (3.7),
Washington (3.5), Oregon (3.3), Montana (3.1), Pennsylvania (3.0), West
Virginia (3.0), California (2.9), New Jersey (2.9), and Wisconsin (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 26 were
in Massachusetts (+4,113), Rhode Island (+1,391), Kentucky (+824), Texas
(+466), and Indiana (+268), while the largest decreases were in California
(-5,588), North Carolina (-2,422), Illinois (-2,354), Michigan (-2,266), and
Missouri (-1,942).
