SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Feb. 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 275,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 269,000. The 4-week moving average was 284,000, a decrease of 250 from the previous week's revised average of 284,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Feb. 19, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb. 19 was 2,098,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,100,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,117,250, an increase of 25,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,091,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 258,874 in the week ending Feb. 26, a decrease of 22,779 from the previous week. There were 297,918 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending Feb. 19, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,530,396, a decrease of 133,973 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,764,594.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Feb. 12.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,047 in the week ending Feb. 19, a decrease of 188 from the prior week. There were 1,053 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 63 from the preceding week.

There were 19,020 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 12, an increase of 1,924 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,910, a decrease of 19 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 12 were in Alaska (6.5 percent), Puerto Rico (5.4), Rhode Island (3.9), Idaho (3.8), Montana (3.6), West Virginia (3.6), Washington (3.5), Pennsylvania (3.4), Oregon (3.3), and New Jersey (3.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 19 were in Missouri (+2,041), Washington (+1,585), Illinois (+1,317), Delaware (+953), and Connecticut (+526), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-14,956), New York (-2,931), Pennsylvania (-2,927), Georgia (-1,962), and Tennessee (-1,841).
