SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATAIn the week ending Feb. 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 278,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 285,000. The 4-week moving average was 286,500, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 283,500. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Feb. 12, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb. 12 was 2,092,000, a decrease of 42,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,134,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,089,250, a decrease of 5,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,094,250. UNADJUSTED DATAThe advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 290,947 in the week ending Feb. 19, a decrease of 20,789 from the previous week. There were 286,130 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending Feb. 12, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,654,762, an increase of 38,724 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,723,859. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Feb. 5. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,234 in the week ending Feb. 12, a decrease of 179 from the prior week. There were 1,115 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 60 from the preceding week. There were 17,252 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 5, a decrease of 2,957 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,118, an increase of 172 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 5 were in Alaska (6.5 percent), Puerto Rico (5.1), Rhode Island (4.1), Idaho (3.7), Washington (3.5), Oregon (3.4), Montana (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.2), West Virginia (3.1), New Jersey (2.9), and Wisconsin (2.9). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 12 were in Wisconsin (+1,200), Vermont (+16), and the Virgin Islands (+6), while the largest decreases were in California (-5,949), Pennsylvania (-4,869), Illinois (-4,112), New Jersey (-3,153), and Missouri (-3,026).
