SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Feb. 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 283,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 303,000. The 4-week moving average was 281,500, an increase
of 4,750 from the previous week's revised average of 276,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7
percent for the week ending Feb. 5, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Feb. 5 was 2,147,000, an increase of 7,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,140,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,101,000, an
increase of 20,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,080,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 311,001 in the week ending Feb. 12, a decrease of 53,959
from the previous week. There were 320,660 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during
the week ending Feb. 5, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.
The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,632,800, a decrease of 46,063 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,758,164.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Jan. 29.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,412 in the week ending Feb. 5, an increase of 217 from the prior
week. There were 1,174 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase
of 35 from the preceding week.
There were 20,198 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Jan. 29, an increase of 1,385 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,740, a decrease of 473 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 29 were
in Alaska (6.6 percent), Puerto Rico (5.4), Rhode Island (4.3), Idaho (3.8),
Montana (3.5), Pennsylvania (3.5), Washington (3.5), West Virginia (3.4),
Oregon (3.3), California (2.9), New Jersey (2.9), and Wisconsin (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 5 were
in North Carolina (+19,984), California (+11,354), South Carolina (+3,337),
Arkansas (+2,674), and Oklahoma (+2,674), while the largest decreases were in
Ohio (-3,593), New York (-2,918), Wisconsin (-1,904), Indiana (-1,467), and
Illinois (-1,137).
