In the week ending Feb. 5, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 301,000, an increase of 27,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 274,000. The 4-week moving average was
276,250, a decrease of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average of
278,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.7 percent for the week ending Jan. 29, an increase of 0.1 percentage
point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.6 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Jan. 29 was 2,157,000, an increase of
165,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 1,992,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,084,250, an increase of 4,750 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,079,500.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 363,114 in the week ending Feb. 5, an increase of
30,587 from the previous week. There were 344,948 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending Jan. 29, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI
benefits in state programs totaled 2,700,660, an increase of 156,979 from the
preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was
2,853,645.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Jan. 22.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,185 in the week ending Jan. 29, a decrease of 143 from the
prior week. There were 1,137 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 119 from the preceding week.
There were 18,945 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 22, a decrease of 2,266 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,413, an
increase of 604 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Jan. 22 were in Alaska (6.8 percent), Puerto Rico (5.7), Rhode Island (4.1),
Idaho (3.7), Washington (3.6), Oregon (3.4), Montana (3.2), West Virginia
(3.1), Pennsylvania (3.0), California (2.9), and Wisconsin (2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Jan. 29 were in New York (+3,586), Illinois (+2,687), Missouri (+1,914),
California (+1,701), and Indiana (+1,391), while the largest decreases were in
Alabama (-5,377), Texas (-2,127), Massachusetts (-1,809), Tennessee (-1,753),
and South Carolina (-1,493).
