SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending Jan. 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 274,000, a decrease of 5,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 279,000. The 4-week moving average was 282,000, a decrease of
9,000 from the previous week's revised average of 291,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6
percent for the week ending Jan. 22, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending Jan. 22 was 2,005,000, a decrease of 136,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,141,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,087,500, a
decrease of 38,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,126,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs,
unadjusted, totaled 332,256 in the week ending Jan. 29, a decrease of 13,602
from the previous week. There were 349,835 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during
the week ending Jan. 22, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted
number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,560,106, a
decrease of 51,368 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3
percent and the volume was 2,802,827.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending
Jan. 15.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 1,334 in the week ending Jan. 22, a decrease of 363 from the prior
week. There were 1,023 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 311 from the preceding week.
There were 21,299 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits
for the week ending Jan. 15, an increase of 1,416 from the previous week. Newly
discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,045, a decrease of 178 from
the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 15 were
in Alaska (6.8 percent), Puerto Rico (5.8), Rhode Island (3.9), Idaho (3.7),
Washington (3.6), Montana (3.5), Oregon (3.4), Pennsylvania (3.2), West
Virginia (3.1), California (2.8), and Wisconsin (2.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 22 were
in Massachusetts (+835), Delaware (+113), Nebraska (+98), California (+74), and
New Hampshire (+55), while the largest decreases were in Tennessee (-10,001),
Georgia (-9,809), Michigan (-9,476), Pennsylvania (-9,363), and Alabama
(-6,644).
