In the week ending Jan. 22, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 266,000, an increase of 1,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 265,000. The 4-week moving average was
288,000, a decrease of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of
290,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 1.7 percent for the week ending Jan. 15, unchanged from the prior week's
revised rate of 1.7 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Jan. 15 was 2,140,000, an increase of
76,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,064,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,125,500, a decrease of 4,250 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,129,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 328,869 in the week ending Jan. 22, a decrease of
114,378 from the previous week. There were 364,737 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1999.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent during the week ending Jan. 15, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,611,125, a decrease of 71,602 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was
2,862,950.
Extended benefits were not available in any state during
the week ending Jan. 8.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,728 in the week ending Jan. 15, a decrease of 2,283 from
the prior week. There were 1,334 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 76 from the preceding week.
There were 20,114 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 8, a decrease of 2,283 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,398, an
increase of 209 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Jan. 8 were in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.7), Rhode Island (3.9),
Idaho (3.6), Washington (3.5), Michigan (3.3), Oregon (3.3), Pennsylvania
(3.1), West Virginia (3.0), California (2.9), Montana (2.9), and Wisconsin
(2.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Jan. 15 were in Georgia (+1,910), Puerto Rico (+959), Maine (+228), Rhode
Island (+174), and the District of Columbia (+96), while the largest decreases
were in Michigan (-17,628), New York (-14,665), North Carolina (-12,066),
Tennessee (-11,473), and Ohio (-8,679).
