SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 272,000, a decrease of 39,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 311,000. The 4-week moving average was 292,000, a decrease of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average of 294,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending Jan. 8, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 8 was 2,009,000, a decrease of 129,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,138,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,116,000, a decrease of 20,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,136,250.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 454,776 in the week ending Jan. 15, a decrease of 151,921 from the previous week. There were 514,082 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending Jan. 8, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,611,087, a decrease of 151,392 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,891,822.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Jan. 1.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,781 in the week ending Jan. 8, an increase of 1,719 from the prior week. There were 1,409 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 515 from the preceding week.

There were 22,550 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 1, an increase of 3,864 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 14,380, an increase of 1,075 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 1 were in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (4.9), Rhode Island (4.0), Idaho (3.7), Oregon (3.6), Washington (3.6), Wisconsin (3.3), Arkansas (3.2), California (3.1), and Pennsylvania (3.1).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 8 were in California (+21,599), North Carolina (+20,252), Tennessee (+14,554), Michigan (+11,988), and Texas (+10,562), while the largest decreases were in Wisconsin (-6,862), Kentucky (-6,376), Massachusetts (-2,824), Pennsylvania (-1,490), and New Hampshire (-1,480).
