SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 309,000, unchanged from the previous week's unrevised figure of 309,000. The 4-week moving average was 294,000, an increase of 10,500 from the previous week's revised average of 283,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.7 percent for the week ending Jan. 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 1 was 2,150,000, a decrease of 17,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,167,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,141,000, an increase of 12,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,128,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 602,219 in the week ending Jan. 8, an increase of 164,423 from the previous week. There were 713,805 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the week ending Jan. 1, an increase of 0.4 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,778,201, an increase of 524,826 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.5 percent and the volume was 3,066,316.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 25.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,061 in the week ending Jan. 1, a decrease of 589 from the prior week. There were 899 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 48 from the preceding week.

There were 18,927 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 25, a decrease of 1,368 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,346, an increase of 466 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 25 were in Alaska (5.6 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Oregon (3.2), Washington (3.2), Idaho (3.1), Rhode Island (3.1), Montana (2.7), Pennsylvania (2.7), Wisconsin (2.6), and California (2.5).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan. 1 were in Pennsylvania (+12,783), North Carolina (+11,428), Tennessee (+10,285), Michigan (+9,376), and New York (+8,968), while the largest decreases were in California (-11,428), Texas (-7,275), Illinois (-3,044), Indiana (-2,527), and Oklahoma (-1,836).
