SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 309,000, an increase of 33,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 276,000. The 4-week moving average was 283,750, an increase of 3,500 from the previous week's revised average of 280,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.8 percent for the week ending Dec. 25, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 1.7 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Dec. 25 was 2,231,000, an increase of 77,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,154,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,143,750, an increase of 28,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,115,500.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 438,205 in the week ending Jan. 1, an increase of 59,716 from the previous week. There were 508,983 initial claims in the comparable week in 1999.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending Dec. 25, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,320,015, an increase of 224,621 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,485,965.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Dec. 18.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,644 in the week ending Dec. 25, an increase of 320 from the prior week. There were 857 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 322 from the preceding week.

There were 20,550 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Dec. 18, an increase of 1,227 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,102, a decrease of 1,025 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Dec. 18 were in Alaska (5.3 percent), Puerto Rico (5.0), Washington (3.0), Rhode Island (2.9), California (2.8), Oregon (2.8), Idaho (2.7), Montana (2.4), Pennsylvania (2.4), Arkansas (2.2), Nevada (2.2), and New Jersey (2.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Dec. 25 were in Wisconsin (+9,754), Iowa (+4,030), Kentucky (+3,914), Massachusetts (+3,803), and Indiana (+3,398), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-2,429), Virginia (-2,350), Alabama (-848), South Carolina (-656), and Louisiana (-478).
