Vice President Al Gore and Labor Secretary Alexis M. Herman today
announced that the U.S. Department of Labor is awarding nearly $40 million in
grants to 37 states and the Virgin Islands to continue their efforts to secure
unemployment insurance benefits through the Year 2000 and beyond. Last year all
50 states and the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia
shared $205 million to address Y2K issues.
"The unemployment insurance system cleared its first Y2K hurdle with
flying colors in January when state agencies began processing new claims that
will extend into 2000," Vice President Gore said. "All states were able to
handle Year 2000 dates successfully and without any delay in benefit payments."
Secretary Herman added, "These grants will give states the technology
and support necessary to guarantee on-time payments when the date changes in
January."
Given the federal-state partnership in operating the Employment Service
and Unemployment Insurance programs, the federal funds will supplement state
monies to be spent on addressing Year 2000 problems on computer systems.
All Y2K funds will be used to acquire new hardware, assist with code
renovations and address other system problems. The grants are particularly
intended to assist states in ensuring that systems associated with the payment
of unemployment insurance benefits are Year 2000 compliant.
