Vice President Al Gore and Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman today announced a $26 million contract awarded to ResCare, Inc. to operate the Treasure Island Job Corps Center in San Francisco.

ResCare, headquartered in Louisville, Ky., currently runs thirteen other Job Corp centers nationwide.

"We must continue to find every possible way to help young people in California and across America get the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century," Vice President Gore said. "This Job Corps Center will provide at-risk young people in the Bay Area with the skills and training they need to get and keep good, higher paying jobs."

The Treasure Island training center will be one of the largest of the Job Corps' 115 centers across the country and the largest of California's seven Job Corps facilities. Construction is more than 75 percent complete. ResCare will begin accepting students in June, and total capacity of 850 students is expected to be reached by next December.

The center will offer a wide range of learning opportunities from basic education developing math to preparation for careers ranging from the culinary arts to business skills and the building trades.

"This center is an investment in the future for both the City of San Francisco and for the students whose lives it will change," Secretary Herman said.

ResCare will combine an existing culinary arts training program at Treasure Island with those to be offered at the new Job Corps Center.

The center's multi-faceted training will include academic programs such as basic and graded reading , writing/thinking skills and math, and General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Related educational programs such as world of work, health, drivers, education, parenting, cultural awareness and English as a Second Language (ESL) will also be offered.

Treasure Island Job Corps Center will train students in building and apartment maintenance, child care occupations, business/clerical and accounting occupations, basic and advanced culinary arts, health occupations, hotel/motel clerical skills, retail sales, security officer training, carpentry, cement masonry and electrical occupations.

Established in 1964, Job Corps has served over 1.7 million disadvantaged youth. It currently provides opportunities to over 60,000 students a year, ages 16-24, at 115 campuses nationwide, including vocational, and social skills training as well as job placement services.
