The U.S. Department of Labor is awarding $9 million to projects in 10
states to provide remote filing of initial unemployment insurance claims, Vice
President Al Gore and Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman announced today.
"These new projects will help people get the support they need quickly
so they can turn their attention to finding new jobs to help themselves and
their families," Vice President Gore said.
"Using the telephone and the Internet to file claims is a great idea
which saves time, frustration and money," Secretary Herman said. "I'm glad to
see these 10 states moving ahead with their projects."
The department is funding five remote filing systems that use the
Internet in Iowa, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Wyoming and
seven telephone-based remote filing systems in Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, New York,
Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin. They were selected from a number of proposals on
the basis of measurable improvements in quality, convenience and reduced costs
to claimants, as well as strategic design and technical merit.
Funding of up to $1 million per state was available for telephone
systems and up to $500,000 per state for Internet systems. This is the third
year that the department has offered these grants.
