The New Devens Job Corps Center in Ayer, Mass., will soon be open to
students. The contract to operate the center has been awarded to Adams &
Associates, Inc., of Reno, Nev., an experienced operator of Job Corps Centers,
Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman announced today. The company received the
nearly $10 million contract for the first two years of operation.
"Job Corps does a great job of preparing at-risk youth for a successful
future," Secretary Herman said. "This center is one of several new ones added
since 1994 to serve more young people. Through Job Corps they learn the meaning
of success and can develop the skills they need to get good jobs."
Mary Silva, national director of Job Corps, added, "It is always
exciting when a new Job Corps center opens. It means more young people will
benefit from this program. It is also important for the region because it means
more well trained workers."
The Devens center will serve as many as 480 residential and
non-residential young men and women annually. They will receive educational and
vocational training, job placement services, social skills training, parenting
classes, and job readiness training. The first students will arrive in
September. The center is located on the former Fort Devens military base.
Jobs they will train for include automobile mechanic, painter, office
worker, carpenter, dental assistant, computer technician and skilled
manufacturing workers.
Adams & Associates operates four other Job Corps centers -- two in
Maryland, one in Oklahoma, and one in Missouri.
Established in 1964, Job Corps has served more than 1.7 million
disadvantaged youth. Each year, the program provides opportunities to more than
65,000 students, ages 16 to 24, at 113 campuses nationwide, including the
District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
