The U.S. Department of Labor is awarding a $12,582,959 contract to J.W.
and Sons, Inc., of Petaluma, Calif., to renovate seven buildings at the former
Treasure Island Naval Station in San Francisco to become the home of a new Job
Corps Center. The buildings will be converted for use as dormitories,
vocational and educational classrooms, vocational shops, culinary-arts training
building and storage areas.
"The Job Corps does a great job of preparing at-risk youth for a
successful future," Secretary of Labor Alexis M. Herman said, in announcing the
contract. "This new Job Corps center will expand the program in California,
which means more at-risk youth will have the opportunity to lead successful,
productive lives."
Construction will take about 14 months.
The Treasure Island Job Corps Center will accommodate as many as 850
young men and women in academic and vocational classes that will provide them
with the skills they need for many kinds of jobs. Specific vocational offerings
include carpentry, cement masonry, child care, basic and advanced culinary
arts, and health care fields.
Established in 1964, Job Corps has served more than 1.7 million
disadvantaged youth. Each year, it provides opportunities to more than 65,000
students, ages 16 to 24, at 113 campuses nationwide. Participants receive
academic, vocational, and social skills training, as well as job placement
assistance.
