SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA
In the week ending July 13, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted
initial claims was 364,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's
revised figure of 370,000. The 4-week moving average was 359,750, an increase
of 1,750 from the previous week's revised average of 358,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3
percent for the week ending July 6, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised
rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during
the week ending July 6 was 2,554,000, a decrease of 78,000 from the preceding
week's revised level of 2,632,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,581,750, an
increase of 11,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,570,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 446,594 in the week ending July 13, an increase
of 63,556 from the previous week. There were 491,891 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during
the week ending July 6, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior
week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,487,416, an increase of 229,284 from the preceding week. A
year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 2,677,411.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the
week ending June 29.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees
totaled 3,248 in the week ending July 6, an increase of 618 from the prior
week. There were 2,035 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease
of 77 from the preceding week.
There were 23,000 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI
benefits for the week ending June 29, a decrease of 2,913 from the previous
week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 21,871, a decrease of
785 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 29 were
in Puerto Rico (6.3 percent), Alaska (3.9), Rhode Island (3.9), California
(3.2), Washington (3.1), Hawaii (2.9), Oregon (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.9), New
Jersey (2.7), and Connecticut (2.5).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending July 6 were
in Michigan (+21,465), Wisconsin (+8,295), Kentucky (+5,627), New York
(+5,626), and Indiana (+4,662), while the largest decreases were in California
(-5,785), Virginia (-1,230), Connecticut (-1,122), Missouri (-1,053), and Maine
(-456).
