In the week ending June 29, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 351,000, a
decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 355,000. The 4-week moving average was
355,750, a decrease of 750 from the previous week's unrevised average of 356,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending June 22,
unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 22 was
2,577,000, an increase of 7,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,570,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,541,500, a decrease of 6,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,547,750.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 316,336 in the
week ending June 29, an increase of 3,770 from the previous week. There were 341,207 initial claims in
the comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 22,
unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state
programs totaled 2,327,280, a decrease of 13,596 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2
percent and the volume was 2,386,331.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the week ending June 15.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,972 in the week ending
June 22, a decrease of 338 from the prior week. There were 2,154 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
a decrease of 30 from the preceding week.
There were 23,712 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 15,
a decrease of 1,285 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,794, an
increase of 546 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 15 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent),
Alaska (4.5), Rhode Island (3.8), California (3.5), Washington (3.3), Hawaii (3.1), Pennsylvania (3.0),
Oregon (2.9), New Jersey (2.8), and Arkansas (2.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 22 were in California (+6,094),
Michigan (+2,539), New Jersey (+1,471), Oregon (+1,111), and Washington (+836), while the largest decreases
were in Ohio (-1,552), Tennessee (-1,441), Texas (-1,334), Georgia (-1,025), and Indiana (-1,011).
