ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report Seasonally Adjusted Data [06/27/1996]

In the week ending June 22, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 355,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 357,000. The 4-week moving average was 356,500, an increase of 2,500 from the previous week's revised average of 354,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending June 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 2.2 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 15 was 2,574,000, an increase of 66,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,508,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,549,000, an increase of 11,250 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,537,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 312,921 in the week ending June 22, an increase of 5,727 from the previous week. There were 324,411 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending June 15, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,344,714, an increase of 64,909 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,378,798.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico during the week ending June 8.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,294 in the week ending June 15, a decrease of 342 from the prior week. There were 2,182 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 40 from the preceding week.

There were 25,056 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 8, an increase of 2,298 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,339, a decrease of 376 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 8 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (4.7), Rhode Island (3.8), Washington (3.4), California (3.1), Oregon (3.0), Hawaii (2.9), Pennsylvania (2.9), New Jersey (2.8), and Arkansas (2.6). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 15 were in Texas (+1,517), Virginia (+1,278), Ohio (+751), Wisconsin (+496), and Hawaii (+247), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-4,799), California (-2,096), New York (-2,080), Tennessee (-1,886), and Pennsylvania (-1,292).
