In the week ending June 8, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 360,000, an increase of 6,000 from the
previous week's unrevised figure of 354,000. The 4-week moving average was
351,000, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of
349,000.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.2 percent for the week ending June 1, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending June 1 was 2,516,000, a decrease of 88,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,604,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,546,000, a decrease of 6,250 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,552,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 328,855 in the week ending June 8, an increase of
62,725 from the previous week. There were 340,606 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent during the week ending June 1, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,349,524, an increase of 53,232 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was
2,412,575.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico
during the week ending May 25.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 2,400 in the week ending June 1, an increase of 595 from the
prior week. There were 1,734 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 204 from the preceding week.
There were 23,932 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 25, an increase of 1,243 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 22,933, a
decrease of 422 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 25 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (4.8), Rhode Island (3.9),
Washington (3.5), California (3.2), Oregon (3.2), Pennsylvania (3.0), Hawaii
(2.9), New Jersey (2.8), and Idaho (2.7).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
June 1 were in Arkansas (+1,131), South Carolina (+1,051), Alabama (+912), Ohio
(+736), and Kentucky (+735), while the largest decreases were in California
(-6,923), New York (-2,405), Florida (-1,945), Colorado (-1,717), and
Washington (-1,610).
