In the week ending May 25, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 346,000, an increase of 1,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 345,000. The 4-week moving average was
345,750, a decrease of 500 from the previous week's revised average of
346,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending May 18, an increase of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.2 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 18 was 2,543,000, an increase of 4,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,539,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,547,750, a decrease of 3,250 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,551,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 288,346 in the week ending May 25, an increase of
440 from the previous week. There were 314,442 initial claims in the comparable
week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1
percent during the week ending May 18, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,385,758, a decrease of 58,895 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was
2,394,017.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska and Puerto Rico
during the week ending May 11.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,716 in the week ending May 18, a decrease of 78 from the
prior week. There were 1,926 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 67 from the preceding week.
There were 25,673 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 11, an increase of 1,655 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,797, a
decrease of 77 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
May 11 were in Puerto Rico (5.9 percent), Alaska (5.6), Rhode Island (4.4),
Washington (3.6), California (3.5), Oregon (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.2), Hawaii
(3.0), New Jersey (3.0), and Vermont (3.0).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
May 18 were in Oregon (+942), Missouri (+859), Mississippi (+691), Colorado
(+631), and North Carolina (+478), while the largest decreases were in
California (-4,389), Michigan (-3,376), Pennsylvania (-2,604), New York
(-1,824), and Florida (-1,036).
