ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report Seasonally Adjusted Data [05/23/1996]

In the week ending May 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 344,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 351,000. The 4-week moving average was 345,750, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's revised average of 352,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent for the week ending May 11, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 11 was 2,537,000, a decrease of 3,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,540,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,550,250, a decrease of 17,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,568,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 287,518 in the week ending May 18, a decrease of 15,818 from the previous week. There were 316,305 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2 percent during the week ending May 11, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,443,174, a decrease of 18,263 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,428,514.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending May 4.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,794 in the week ending May 11, a decrease of 105 from the prior week. There were 1,989 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 17 from the preceding week.

There were 24,015 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending May 4, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 23,864, a decrease of 545 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending May 4 were in Puerto Rico (6.3 percent), Alaska (5.9), Rhode Island (4.3), Washington (3.7), California (3.5), Oregon (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.2), Vermont (3.2), Maine (3.1), Hawaii (3.0), Idaho (3.0), and New Jersey (3.0).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 11 were in California (+2,458), Michigan (+2,343), Pennsylvania (+1,180), Kansas (+914), and Delaware (+848), while the largest decreases were in Alabama (-1,411), Ohio (-739), Washington (-689), Georgia (-639), and New York (-608).
