In the week ending May 11, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 352,000, an increase of 12,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 340,000. The 4-week moving average was
353,000, a decrease of 1,750 from the previous week's revised average of
354,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending May 4, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending May 4 was 2,544,000, a decrease of 28,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,572,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,570,000, a decrease of 10,750 from the preceding week's revised average
of 2,580,750.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 303,394 in the week ending May 11, an increase of
5,241 from the previous week. There were 311,646 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.2
percent during the week ending May 4, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,465,219, a decrease of 127,374 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was
2,408,314.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending April 27.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,898 in the week ending May 4, an increase of 274 from the
prior week. There were 2,006 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 122 from the preceding week.
There were 27,054 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 27, an increase of 1,388 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,464,
an increase of 93 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
April 27 were in Alaska (6.7), Puerto Rico (6.1), Rhode Island (4.5),
Washington (3.8), California (3.7), Oregon (3.6), Vermont (3.6), Idaho (3.3),
Maine (3.3), and Pennsylvania (3.3).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
May 4 were in California (+5,011), Alabama (+2,306), Pennsylvania (+1,877),
Georgia (+1,536), and Illinois (+853), while the largest decreases were in
Oregon (-1,914), New Jersey (-1,344), Michigan (-890), Maine (-820), and
Washington (-721).
