The U.S. Department of Labor has selected Training and
Development Corporation (TDC) of Bucksport, Maine, to operate a new Job Corps
center on Loring Air Force Base, Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich announced
today.
"Loring Air Force Base served this nation well as a
Strategic Air Command installation," said President Clinton. "It will continue
its service to the community by providing job training and education
opportunities to thousands of young people."
The former air force base, located in Limestone, just
outside Caribou, is one of eight sites selected in 1994 to become new Job Corps
centers. The facilities have been renovated to accommodate 380 young men and
women, aged 16-24, who will live at the center while they receive vocational
training, as well as instruction in reading and math, health and parenting. The
center is scheduled to open in December 1996.
"Like most Job Corps centers, Loring will offer training in
fields such as construction trades, health occupations, and business and
clerical positions," said Secretary Reich. "But students at the Loring center
will also have training options that reflect a wider range of career
possibilities."
Training areas that are expected to have broad appeal
include physical therapist assistants and recreation specialists. The physical
therapist program will be conducted in conjunction with the University of Maine
at Presque Isle and the Northern Maine Vocational Technical School.
Established in 1964, Job Corps has served over 1.7 million
disadvantaged youth. It currently provides opportunities to over 60,000
students a year, aged 16-24, at 110 campuses nationwide, including the District
of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Participants in the program receive academic,
vocational, and social skills training, as well as job placement services.
The contract to the Training and Development Corporation
continues through April 1998 and may be extended three additional years
assuming satisfactory performance of the contract.
In 1991 the Base Closure and Realignment Commission
recommended that Loring Air Force Base be closed, and it ceased operation in
September 1994.
