ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report [05/09/1996]

In the week ending May 4, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 336,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 348,000. The 4-week moving average was 353,750, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 357,250.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending April 27, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending April 27 was 2,574,000, an increase of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,559,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,582,000, a decrease of 12,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,594,750.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 294,469 in the week ending May 4, an increase of 2,436 from the previous week. There were 325,398 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending April 27, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,594,897, a decrease of 43,335 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,500,747.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April 20.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,623 in the week ending April 27, a decrease of 176 from the prior week. There were 1,880 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 122 from the preceding week.

There were 25,666 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 20, a decrease of 3,859 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 24,449, a decrease of 881 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 20 were in Puerto Rico (7.4), Alaska (6.7), Rhode Island (5.0), Washington (3.9), California (3.7), Maine (3.7), Vermont (3.7), Oregon (3.5), Idaho (3.4), and Pennsylvania (3.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 27 were in Oregon (+1,394), Maine (+770), New Mexico (+314), Mississippi (+273), and Arkansas (+215), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-5,728), New York (-5,524), California (-5,479), South Carolina (-4,225), and Massachusetts (-3,470).
