In the week ending April 13, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 360,000, an increase of 10,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 350,000. The 4-week moving average was
387,250, a decrease of 6,500 from the previous week's revised average of
393,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending April 6, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending April 6 was 2,589,000, a decrease of 53,000
from the preceding week's revised level of 2,642,000. The 4-week moving average
was 2,643,500, a decrease of 1,500 from the preceding week's revised average of
2,645,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 344,742 in the week ending April 13, a decrease
of 9,732 from the previous week. There were 318,030 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5
percent during the week ending April 6, a decrease of 0.2 percentage point from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits
in state programs totaled 2,811,745, a decrease of 178,530 from the preceding
week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was
2,667,325.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending March 30.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 3,157 in the week ending April 6, an increase of 1,507 from
the prior week. There were 2,098 initial claims by newly discharged veterans,
an increase of 78 from the preceding week.
There were 29,100 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 30, a decrease of 563 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 25,805, an
increase of 122 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 30 were in Alaska (6.8 percent), Rhode Island (5.5), Puerto Rico (4.8),
Montana (4.3), Idaho (4.2), Michigan (4.2), California (4.1), Washington (4.1),
Maine (3.9), Pennsylvania (3.9), and West Virginia (3.9).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
April 6 were in Ohio (+3,171), Illinois (+3,088), California (+2,936), Alabama
(+2,454), and Texas (+2,324), while the largest decreases were in Michigan
(-11,038), Indiana (-3,368), Tennessee (-2,872), Kentucky (-1,292), and
Wisconsin (-1,034).
