In the week ending March 30, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 408,000, a decrease of 25,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 433,000. The 4-week moving average was
394,750, an increase of 11,250 from the previous week's revised average of
383,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.4 percent for the week ending March 23, unchanged from the prior week's
unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending March 23 was 2,689,000, an increase of
46,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,643,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,645,250, an increase of 22,000 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,623,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 345,576 in the week ending March 30, a decrease
of 51,167 from the previous week. There were 294,031 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8
percent during the week ending March 23, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 3,097,241, a decrease of 53,369 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 2,884,431.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending March 16.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,685 in the week ending March 23, an increase of 72 from the
prior week. There were 2,168 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an
increase of 120 from the preceding week.
There were 33,280 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 16, an increase of 2,885 from
the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,267,
an increase of 948 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
March 16 were in Alaska (7.0 percent), Puerto Rico (5.9), Rhode Island (5.9),
Idaho (4.7), Montana (4.7), California (4.4), Washington (4.4), Pennsylvania
(4.3), the Virgin Islands (4.2), Maine (4.1), and West Virginia (4.1).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
March 23 were in Michigan (+33,104), Indiana (+8,453), Wisconsin (+4,923), New
York (+2,892), and Maryland (+2,744), while the largest decreases were in
California (-4,979), Oklahoma (-3,188), New Jersey (-2,701), Puerto Rico
(-1,314), and North Carolina (-1,275).
