ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report [03/21/1996]

In the week ending March 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 384,000, an increase of 32,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 352,000. The 4-week moving average was 364,250, an increase of 500 from the previous week's revised average of 363,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending March 9, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending March 9, was 2,595,000, a decrease of 62,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,657,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,636,250, a decrease of 14,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,651,000.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 355,954 in the week ending March 16, an increase of 142 from the previous week. There were 319,218 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent during the week ending March 9, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,150,163, a decrease of 139,447 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was 3,058,336.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending March 2.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,126 in the week ending March 9, an increase of 74 from the prior week. There were 2,433 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 358 from the preceding week.

There were 35,713 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending March 2, an increase of 3,348 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,431, a decrease of 71 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending March 2 were in Alaska (7.5 percent), Puerto Rico (6.4), Rhode Island (6.0), Idaho (5.1), Montana (4.9), Washington (4.8), California (4.5), Pennsylvania (4.5), West Virginia (4.4), Maine (4.3), and the Virgin Islands (4.3).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 9 were in Georgia (+2,254), Ohio (+1,176), South Carolina (+1,549), Texas (+1,023), and Delaware (+794), while the largest decreases were in New York (-4,302), California (-2,934), Michigan (-2,528), Connecticut (-1,627), and Alabama (-1,400).
