The U.S. Department of Labor is awarding a grant of
$3,430,595 to serve approximately 1200 workers who are losing their jobs as a
result of closures of 25 apparel/textile plants in Alabama, Secretary of Labor
Robert B. Reich announced today. The grant is going to Alabama's Department of
Economic and Community Affairs, the operator of Job Training Partnership Act
programs in Alabama.
"This country needs the talents and skills of all its
workers," said Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich. "We need to provide the
necessary training, retraining and support services so our workforce can remain
as competitive as any nation's. This project will ensure that these workers,
who are experiencing the short-term consequences of global competition, will
continue to be a significant, productive force in the emerging global economy."
The grant, authorized under the Job Training Partnership
Act, will provide a number of services including skills assess- ment, help
finding jobs, career and personal counseling, remedial and occupational skills
training and support services to those in training such as help with day care
or transportation expenses.
The dislocated worker program is a comprehensive retraining
approach to assist workers who have been, or are about to be, laid off for
reasons such as technological change, foreign competition or government
actions. Generally such workers are eligible if they are unlikely to return to
their previous industry or occupation.
