ETA Press Release: UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT [03/14/1996]

In the week ending March 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 353,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week's unrevised figure of 363,000. The 4-week moving average was 364,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's revised average of 371,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.4 percent for the week ending March 2, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending March 2, was 2,655,000, an increase of 54,000 from the preceding week's unrevised level of 2,601,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,650,500, a decrease of 25,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,676,000.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 356,209 in the week ending March 9, a decrease of 11,182 from the previous week. There were 339,580 initial claims in the comparable week in 1995.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9 percent during the week ending March 2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,286,937, an increase of 1,781 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.8 percent and the volume was 3,054,753.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending Feb. 24.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 2,053 in the week ending March 2, an increase of 228 from the prior week. There were 2,074 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 109 from the preceding week.

There were 32,415 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 24, a decrease of 4,005 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 27,610, a decrease of 683 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Feb. 24 were in Alaska (8.0 percent), Puerto Rico (7.8), Rhode Island (6.3), Idaho (4.9), Washington (4.9), Maine (4.5), California (4.4), Pennsylvania (4.4), Oregon (4.3), Montana (4.2), New Jersey (4.2), and West Virginia (4.2).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending March 2 were in New York (+7,033), California (+5,045), Michigan (+2,779), Missouri (+2,124), and Washington (+2,093), while the largest decreases were in Massachusetts (-4,262), Texas (-1,632), Rhode Island (-1,542), Georgia (-1,423), and Tennessee (-888).
