In the week ending March 2, the advance figure for
seasonally adjusted initial claims was 363,000, an increase of 6,000 from the
previous week's revised figure of 357,000. The 4-week moving average was
370,750, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week's revised average of
371,750.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate
was 2.3 percent for the week ending Feb. 24, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point
from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured
unemployment during the week ending Feb. 24, was 2,601,000, a decrease of
85,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,686,000. The 4-week moving
average was 2,674,500, a decrease of 500 from the preceding week's revised
average of 2,675,000.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state
programs, unadjusted, totaled 367,197 in the week ending March 2, an increase
of 20,506 from the previous week. There were 342,015 initial claims in the
comparable week in 1995.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.9
percent during the week ending Feb. 24, unchanged from the prior week. The
advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs
totaled 3,285,690, an increase of 9,189 from the preceding week. A year
earlier, the rate was 2.9 percent and the volume was 3,140,967.
Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week
ending Feb. 17.
Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian
employees totaled 1,821 in the week ending Feb. 24, a decrease of 765 from the
prior week. There were 1,964 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a
decrease of 373 from the preceding week.
There were 36,383 former Federal civilian employees
claiming UI benefits for the week ending Feb. 17, an increase of 2,740 from the
previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 28,192, an
increase of 266 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending
Feb. 17 were in Alaska (7.3 percent), Rhode Island (6.0), Idaho (5.3), Montana
(5.0), Washington (5.0), Puerto Rico (4.7), West Virginia (4.7), Pennsylvania
(4.6), California (4.2), Maine (4.2), and Oregon (4.2).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending
Feb. 24 were in California (+5,600), Massachusetts (+3,570), Rhode Island
(+1,160), Connecticut (+956), and New Hampshire (+866), while the largest
decreases were in North Carolina (-18,033), Tennessee (-6,963), Oklahoma
(-3,874), New York (-3,328), and Georgia (-3,205).
